Springfield Water Works

Part of SES, the Special Projects team is a leader in delivering Shaft Work solutions to diverse clients, industries, and sites. One such site is United Utilities' Springfield Water Treatment Works, built to purify water extracted from the underlying Bunter Sandstone. SES renewed the original Victorian abstraction tunnels at Springfield, under a joint venture between Galliford-Costain-Atkins (GCA).
The 100-metre shafts were a marvel of Victorian engineering. Unfortunately, their first 30 metres were lined with increasingly-fragile Victorian brickwork, risking groundwater seepage. To prevent the contamination of drinking water, SES designed and installed innovative pre-fabricated shaft liners, strengthened the existing shaft collars, and sealed the shafts. It was a quick and effective solution - and good for generations to come.
